Early in her career, Frances McDormand moved to New York, got a job waiting tables, and found an apartment in the Bronx where she lived with Holly Hunter. The competitiveness between the women manifested itself in some unusual ways. "We used to have contests to see who could get the bathroom the cleanest," McDormand once recalled. "She always beat me -- and I'm anal!"
[McDormand landed her first big job thanks to Hunter, who auditioned for the lead and was offered the job but ran into a scheduling conflict and suggested her. The film? Joel and Ethan Coen's Blood Simple (1984).]
