Charlton Heston was cast as Moses in Cecil B. De Mille's biblical epic The Ten Commandments (1956). For the pivotal scene in which Moses descends Mount Sinai with the Ten Commandments in his arms, Heston insisted on using tablets carved from actual stone drawn from the top of the mountain. "All right," De Mille cried when it the moment arrived, "Moses is coming!" Though Heston came down the mountain as scripted, the stone tablets were so heavy that he was struggling and limping to comical effect. Heston agreed to shoot the scene again -- with wooden tablets.
