One day during the production of Sydney Pollack's Tootsie (1982), Dustin Hoffman, whose character disguises himself as a woman in order to land a job, visited the Russian Tea Room -- in drag -- and bumped into Jon Voight. Though the men had worked together on Midnight Cowboy (1969), Voight failed to recognize his former co-star. "I went up to him and told him how much I liked his work," Hoffman recalled. "We talked for twenty minutes. I finally had to tell him who I was!"
[On another occasion, Hoffman visited his daughter's school, claiming to be her "Aunt Dorothy from Little Rock." Though she had met Hoffman before, his daughter's teacher also believed him. "She talked as if she was talking to another woman, which is much more open than when I was a man," Hoffman reported -- and later told his wife that he was newly convinced that "Life is different for a woman."]
