Such was Frederic Chopin's fastidious nature that a friend -- to whom the composer had lent a manuscript score of his Concerto in E Minor -- was obliged to wear white gloves while turning the pages.

When he returned the immaculate manuscript, Chopin grimaced with apparent disappointment. "My dear fellow!" he exclaimed. "You were smoking when you read it!"
