Suicide Risk

In the 1950s, with her drug habit spiraling out of control, Judy Garland tried (half-heartedly) to kill herself on several occasions. After cutting her throat (twice) and her wrists without success, a doctor sarcastically asked her why she didn't try her ankles (with their larger vessels and higher blood pressures). "I can't," she replied, "because I am a dancer."

[During Garland's custody battle with Sid Luft, it was revealed that Garland had attempted suicide some 23 times -- and had once run around a hotel room, naked, trying to jump out a window.]
