While sitting for the painting of Edward VII's coronation in 1901, the Prince of Wales (the future king George V) asked the artist, Edwin Abbey, about the income of his rival painter John Singer Sargent.

"Do you suppose it's ten thousand pounds?" the prince mused. "I would say more likely twenty thousand," Abbey replied. "My God!" cried the prince. "I wish I had twenty thousand pounds a year!"
