During a Pittsburgh-Penn State football game which Robert Maxwell was officiating, a Pittsburgh running back broke loose and ran the length of the field for a touchdown. Penn State's captain vociferously complained that the runner had stepped out of bounds at his own 10-yard line -- and offered to show Maxwell the incriminating cleat mark.
"Young man," Maxwell replied, "if you want me to go back and look at that cleat mark, you'll have to hire a taxi."
