Charing Cross

After his initial success, images of Dirk Bogarde began to appear all over London. One day the actor received a telephone call from his father. "I've just come through Charing Cross Underground," he remarked. "I suppose you realize that you have brought the family name down as low as you possibly could?"

Despite his understandable grief, Bogarde said nothing about his father's words until some time later. "My dear boy," the older man replied. "It was just a joke. Charing Cross is the deepest station in London. Didn't you know?"

[Bogarde, who called cinema "sexual relief for disappointed people," was once told by a female fan that "I let my husband do it because I think it's you lying on top of me."]
