Shoddy Coleridge

While riding with a friend near his home in the Lake District one day, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, wearing typically tattered clothes, was dismayed to see another party approaching. When the embarrassed poet suggested passing himself off as a servant, however, the friend declined to go along. "I am proud of you as a friend," he explained, "but would be ashamed of you as a servant!"
