In 1990, Mstislav Rostropovich and his wife, the soprano Galina Vishnevskaya, returned to Russia, after spending sixteen years as defectors in the West. After four years of renovations, the couple finally moved into a modest duplex apartment in St. Petersburg.
Why had the renovations taken so long? The building had previously housed more than a hundred tenants.
[Rostropovich managed to find new homes for everyone who had been dispossessed.]
[Rostropovich was the recipient of more than fifty honorary degrees.]
