While traveling around Europe one year, Hans Christian Andersen bumped into Victor Hugo and asked him for an autograph. Hugo acquiesced but, suspecting that the strange Dane might compose an acknowledgment of debt above the signature, squeezed it into the upper left corner of a sheet of paper.
