"Gentlemen," Wilhelm Furtwangler directed his orchestra during a rehearsal one day, "this phrase must be... it must be... it must... you know what I mean -- please try it again."

Shortly thereafter, Furtwangler turned to the cellist Gregor Piatigorsky. "You see how important it is," he remarked, "for a conductor to convey his wishes clearly?"
