Bidder's Bluff

"I bought my first oil lot by bluff," the oil magnate J. Paul Getty once recalled. "I hired a local bank executive to bid for me at a land auction. This unnerved the other bidders who assumed the banker was acting for a big oil company. They decided it was futile to bid at all. The lot was knocked down to me for ?180. Four months later, I sold it for ?14,000."
