"While I was in America, in 1946," Joyce Grenfell once recalled, "a cable reached me. 'Clem says George wishes give you three-quarter length robe.' I guessed that Clem must mean Mr Attlee, and probably George meant the King, but what on earth was the three-quarter length robe? I cabled back, 'Mystified. Please elucidate,' and by return came Reggie's reply. 'Times crossword, silly.' (Three quarters of the word robe is OBE -- Order of the British Empire). I was being honoured for my work in hospitals and camps and the decoration reached me by post in London a year later."
