While touring the United States in 1939, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth were invited for cocktails at the White House with Franklin Roosevelt.

When Roosevelt's mother expressed her disapproval, he felt obliged to explain things to the king. "My mother thinks you should have a cup of tea," he said. "She doesn't approve of cocktails." "Neither," said the king, accepting a drink, "does my mother."
