After the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington in September 2001, comedy was put on hold as the nation mourned. While preparing for the show's next telecast, "Saturday Night Live" producer Lorne Michaels consulted New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani. "Can we be funny?" he asked. The mayor's reply? "Why start now?"
