Valley of the Shadow

"Andrew Gow once visited us during the grouse season at Douglas," the playwright William Douglas-Home once recalled, "and, tired of walking, lay down where he could see over the valley of the Douglas Water. When we returned to him he asked if the local territorials [soldiers] were manoeuvering, and he described seeing men marching along the hillside and down the valley to the village. The Lanarkshire Yeomanry were not in the area that day, but he had described exactly the route taken by the Covenanting army, as theymarched to fight and win over their oppressors, some hundreds ofyears before."
