Richard Lomas: Splat!

In 1991, New Zealand painter Richard Lomas, peeved by another artist's comment that painting was dead, resolved to prove him wrong -- by strapping a freshly painted canvas to the front of the van in which he was travelling across North America. The completed work was reshaped by wind, sun, and several thousand splattered bugs. Inspired, Lomas produced several other masterworks, including canvases strapped to speeding trains. "My paintings may contain dead matter," he once remarked, "but they stimulate lively debate!"
