Gilbert's Demise

Like every hero from the Golden Age of film, John Gilbert was acutely aware that there would come a time when his star would cease to shine. Even so, he was dismayed by the speed of his decline. When he arrived to collect his final check at MGM, Gilbert found a crew at work converting his dressing room into an office for studio chief David O. Selznick. "Please, gentlemen," he glumly remarked, "the corpse isn't even cold yet."
