Revolutionary Proposition?

A statue of Lafayette was once erected in Washington, D.C. One critic (who had walked President Harding's dogs as a young man) remarked that he had always imagined the lady bargaining with Lafayette: "I'll give you your sword," she appears to be saying, "if you give me my clothes!"

[On September 6, 1825, as a Marine Corps Band played the Marseillaise, John Quincy Adams proposed a historic toast -- to the French Marquis de Lafayette, who thereby became the first person ever toasted at a White House dinner. Lafayette also laid the cornerstone of the Bunker Hill Monument on June 17, 1825 (the 50th anniversary of the famous battle).]
