French Capitulation

"Within hours of the French capitulation [in 1940, in the early stages of World War II] Louis Spears invited me

[Lord Boothby] to lunch to meet what he called 'a French brigadier whom I have just brought from Bordeaux.' The brigadier was de Gaulle. When Spears took him to see Churchill the latter said, 'Why have you brought this lanky, gloomy brigadier?' Spears replied, 'Because no one else would come.'"

[De Gaulle, the leader of the Free French and one of the few French leaders who did not capitulate, left France during the German (Vichy) occupation.]
