[One day During World War II] George VI and his queen decided to test the Buckingham palace alarm system [air raid siren], ready for use in case of an enemy parachute drop. They pressed the button. Nothing happened. Enquiries revealed that the officer of the guard, alerted by the alarm, had been quickly reassured by the police sergeant on duty. No raid could be impending, 'as he had heard nothing about it.'"
