In 1974, John Wayne agreed, in exchange for publicity for one of his films, to submit to a roasting by the Harvard Lampoon. He arrived in Cambridge on an armored personnel carrier and was duly presented with the acclaimed (and highly satirical) "Hasty Pudding Award." At a press conference at the Harvard Square Theatre some time later, Wayne fielded several questions from students and the press: "Mr. Wayne," one student asked, "do you look at yourself as an American legend?" "Well," Wayne drily replied, "not being a Harvard man, I don't look at myself any more than necessary."
[Wayne once appeared on "Laugh-In"... in a pink fluffy bunny suit.]
