Rachmaninov's Constant

When the composer and pianist Sergei Rachmaninov played his seemingly interminable Variations on a Theme by Corelli before an audience, he would decide to stop playing when the amount of coughing in the audience reached a certain threshold. His record performance came one evening in New York, where he played eighteen of the twenty variations.
