While attending a production of Mehul's opera Joseph in Egypt one evening, the composer Karl Maria von Weber was annoyed to hear the tenor (Genast) improvising a florid passage in the distorted Italian style. Weber shot the man such a furious look that he tried to leave the theater immediately after the performance. Weber, however, was waiting for him. "What's that you were doing?" he thundered. "Don't you think that if Mehul had wanted any such 'crinkum-crankum' he would have put it better than you? No more such tomfoolery in the future! Go home and sleep off your fit of Italian intoxication!"
