Gossip Columnist

The famed Hollywood gossip columnist Hedda Hopper -- who counted Howard Hughes, William Randolph Hearst, FBI chief John Edgar Hoover, and the Red-baiting Senator Joe McCarthy among her powerful sources -- was both feared and courted, even by Tinseltown's power-brokers. While passing through Beverly Hills one day, Hopper pointed to her hillside home and declared: "That's the house that fear built!"

[Hopper refused to board a plane unless if had been personally inspected by Howard Hughes.]
