Chemical Weapons

During the Crimean War (1853-56), the famed chemist and physicist Michael Faraday was asked by the British government whether there was any way to prepare quantities of poison gas for use on the battlefield against Russian troops and, if so, whether he would direct the project. Faraday's reply? The project was certainly feasible -- and he would have absolutely nothing to do with it.
