Marx's Bluff

One day in 1848 (the year of publication of the Communist Manifesto), Karl Marx met with two Prussian officers in his home in Cologne. Little did he know that he had been targeted for assassination; Marx, who was active among the German labor unions, was understandably considered a threat to the autocrats...

Dressed in his bathrobe, Marx managed to force his assailants out of his home at the point of a gun. The revolver, Marx later delighted in recalling, was not loaded.

[In June 2003, a two hour adaptation of the Communist Manifesto became the surprise hit of the Buenos Aires theatre circuit.]
