[Wilson] was a volleyball," Earnhardt explained. "So... I have visited some racetracks -- particulary one named Darlington that I race on -- that'll drive you insane sometimes, and I told my guys that maybe I'd do better if I had a volleyball in the car -- you know, I was just joking. And the next week we were leading a race at Dover -- about ten laps to go -- and I was like, 'Man, I need some luck,' you know, 'Ten to go, the field's right behind me. What am I gonna do?' and they said, 'Well, you know, you can rub old Wilson for good luck,' and I'm like, 'What do you mean,' and they said, 'Look over to your right' -- he was strapped in the car the whole time! I'd run 490 miles of a 500-mile race and I never saw him -- and he was sitting right there."
