Divine Response

While visiting John Milton one day, James II (then the Duke of York) declared that the poet's blindness was divine retribution for his (written) defense of the execution of Charles I. "If Your Highness thinks that misfortunes are indexes of the wrath of heaven," Milton replied, "what must you think of your father's tragical end? I have only lost my eyes -- he lost his head!"
