Battle of Lake Erie

During the battle of Lake Erie (in the War of 1812), Oliver Hazard Perry's flagship Lawrence was destroyed and he was forced to abandon it and row to the Niagara. He promptly drove the British fleet to surrender and, making no references to heroism or glory, announced his victory with a simple message: "We have met the enemy, and they are ours."

[Perry's words were later immortalized by Walt Kelly's cartoon character, Pogo, who declared: "We have met the enemy and he is us."]
