MacArthur in the Philippines

In early 1942, it became apparent to the Allies that Bataan, American's last foothold in the Philippines, was about to fall to the Japanese. General MacArthur was ordered by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt to evacuate immediately. Though he reluctantly agreed, MacArthur made a promise as he left (on March 16, 1942): "I shall return."
