Bob Kurland - NBA Star Shot-Blocker

While playing at Oklahoma A&M, Bob Kurland (America's first seven foot basketball star) blocked so many shots that the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) introduced a rule prohibiting shots from being blocked on their downward arcs (goaltending).

Even so, such was Kurland's dominance that an official was often stationed on a platform directly above the basket -- for the sole purpose of watching him.

["The rule was designed to stop me," Kurland later observed, "but it really started the big man in basketball because it encouraged bringing in taller players who shot down at the basket instead of smaller ones who shot up."]
