Australian director Bruce Beresford's Boer War drama Breaker Morant (1979) earned him an Oscar nomination for best screenplay. He was also Oscar-nominated for Tender Mercies in 1983. Ironically, Beresford's first Oscar was a Best Picture award for Driving Miss Daisy (1989) -- a film for the direction of which he was not nominated. This unusual event elicited many comments and jibes. Indeed, some Beresford sympathetizers pointedly wondered whether Driving Miss Daisy had directed itself!
