R.E.M. used a "scientific method" for choosing many of the tracks on their second greatest hits collection (In Time: 1988-2003: The Best of R.E.M.): "We had a list of our songs," R.E.M. bassist Mike Mills explained, "and we picked the ones we didn't hate."
