Polanski's Oscar

"Roman Polanski won the best director Oscar for his film 'the Pianist' although he couldn't come to the Unites States to pick up the statue," Conan O'Brien reported in late March 2003. "Apparently Polanski said, 'Picking up something that small is what got me into trouble in the first place.'"

[In 1977, Polanski fled from America after a conviction for the statutory rape of a 13-year old girl (during a dinner party at Jack Nicholson's mansion).]
