Portland Buckaroos (WHL) head coach Hal Laycoe was a stickler for punctuality. Before a game in Los Angeles one day, he called a meeting for twelve o'clock sharp by the hotel pool. By 11:59, everyone had assembled -- with the notable exception of the chronically tardy Tom McVie. As the clock struck noon, McVie appeared on the third-floor balcony outside his room and promptly plunged into the pool fully clothed. "Coach!" he exclaimed as clambered out of the water, "you can't fine me for being late!"
[McVie often amused his teammates by skating around during pre-game warm-ups with a puck in his mouth. He later became a coach himself.]
