In 1997, Joseph Doria, the Democratic leader in the New Jersey state assembly, was quoted in the New Jersey Law Journal complaining about a bill repealing race and gender preferences: "My colleagues and I are upset," he explained, "by this blatant attempt to replace diversity with fairness!"
