Chant Laureate

In 2004, British Poet Laureate Andrew Motion chaired a panel to name the first ever Barclaycard Chant Laureate. The winner's task? To watch Premiership and other football (soccer) matches throughout the 2004/05 season -- and create witty, insightful, rousing, and original chants reflecting the pride and passion of the game.

["Poetry retains an element of chant, of song," Motion explained. "It's an essential part of its primitive appeal and pleasure. I'm delighted to be involved in the search to find the first Barclaycard Chant Laureate, who will chronicle key events in the football calendar in this unique way." Among the other panelists? BBC's Radio's Stuart Hall, Radio 1's Chris Moyles, and Barnsley FC's poet-in-residence Ian McMillan.]
