Appointment for Therapy

After a traumatic love affair, the atheist Slovenian philosopher Slavoj Zizek began seeing the psychoanalyst Jacques-Alain Miller (the son-in-law and intellectual heir of famed neo-Freudian psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan). "The analysis did help me along," Zizek later recalled, "but it was not so much what Miller did as the very fact that I would think, Should I kill myself? What am I saying? Tomorrow at five, I have an appointment with my analyst, so how can I kill myself!"
