Lunar Landing

In July 1969, several the political luminaries and other celebrities offered suggestions for the first words to be spoken on the occasion of Neil Armstrong's historic first steps on the face of the moon (on July 20th).

"I proclaim the moon an international scientific laboratory," future New York mayor Ed Koch proposed. "I shall never escape from strangeness or complete my journey," the poet Stanley Kunitz offered. Bob Hope, of course, also had a suggestion: "I'll be darned -- it's made of cheese!"
