In October 1999, Umberto Pelizzari broke the freediving world record (for "No Limits Variable Weight" diving) by riding a weight 150 meters below the ocean's surface and rising again (2 minutes and 57 seconds later) on a single breath. To celebrate his accomplishment, Pelizzari and his team opened, sprayed, and drank a bottle of champagne -- underwater.
[Before Pelizzari's dive, the 150 meter depth was considered impossible by many medical experts. Pipin Ferraras later broke the record with a 162 meter dive and vowed to break 200 meters.]
[Due to the pressures at extreme depths, a freediver's heart rate can fall below 8 beats per minute.]
