Ross Wilson: Back-up Goalie

Ross "Lefty" Wilson was the Detroit Red Wings' trainer in an era when NHL teams did not have back-up goaltenders. During one memorable game, a goalie was injured and Wilson, a Toronto native, was pressed into service -- to play goal for the Toronto Maple Leafs!

[On another occasion, Wilson played net for the Boston Bruins.]

["He was a throw-back," longtime Red Wings Bruce Martyn commentator once recalled of Wilson. "He was supposed to take care of people, but he'd say, 'Get up, get up. You're not hurt.' I just loved the guy."]
