In 1926, the Chicago Black Hawks fired legendary coach Pete Muldoon. Some time later, sportswriter Jim Coleman began disseminating rumors that the peeved skipper had put an Irish curse on the Hawks in a bid to prevent them from winning another Stanley Cup.

Ironically, the bogus "curse" held for 40 years -- through much of which the NHL encompassed only six teams.
