While campaigning in the 2003 California gubernatorial election race one August day, Ariana Huffington visited poverty-stricken South Central Los Angeles. With the state facing a fiscal crisis, Huffington pledged to "totally reform government" and to make the rich pay more taxes. "Those fat-cat elites who exploit all the loopholes? While the poor people suffer?" GQ's Lisa DePaulo remarked. "Not when Ariana is governor!"
One week later, the L.A. Times reported that, over the previous two years, Huffington -- who lived in a $7 million, 8,000-square-foot home in Brentwood with her multi-millionaire husband Michael Huffington -- had paid $771 in state and federal taxes.
