In 1835, the Irish Roman Catholic leader Daniel O'onnell attacked Benjamin Disraeli in the House of Commons, at one point referring to the future prime minister's Jewish ancestry.

"Yes, I am a Jew," Disraeli replied, "and when the ancestors of the right honorable gentleman were brutal savages in an unknown island, mine were priests in the temple of Solomon."
