Sarah Bernhard was a scrawny seventeen-year-old girl when she debuted in the title role of Racine's Iphigenie. At one point in the drama, when Iphigenie reaches out imploringly to Achilles, a voice from the balcony cried out: "Careful, monsieur, or you'll impale yourself on her toothpicks!"
