NASA: Tax Dollars at Work
In 2004, NASA selected "avant-garde electronic violinist" Laurie Anderson to serve as its artist-in-residence and gave her $20,000 to spend (on a musical creation) at her own discretion. Shortly after the annoucement, Anderson visited a space-research centre and was met with a mixed response. One scientist confessed to being a huge fan, but another asked: "What's she going to do, write a poem?"
