Alfred Hojos: 1,200 Meters

Hungarian swimmer Alfred Hojos won a gold medal in the 1,200 meter event at the 1898 Olympic Games in Athens. With no pool in which to race, the swimmers were unceremoniously dropped 1,200 meters from shore in the Bay of Zea and left to swim for their lives.

"I shivered from the thought of what would happen if I got a cramp from the cold water," Hojos later recalled. "My will to live completely overcame my desire to win."
