Phil Spector: Echo Chamber

"Everyone, I think, liked working for me but hated Gold Star," legendary producer Phil Spector once recalled of the small, dank Hollywood recording studio where he recorded his classic singles. "Gold Star had shit, mice, rats, roaches, a ninety percent chance your car would get stolen and a toilet seat inundated with crabs. Every musician caught crabs, and their wives and girlfriends from them -- I bet those crabs broke up some very sweet long-term relationships...

[But] who the f--- cared? It had a great echo chamber."

[The echo chamber -- a series of cement boxes about three feet high and four feet wide -- was a primary element of Spector's famous Wall of Sound.]
